Pura Vida!

Pura Vida! 7F3E4971-9906-47CE-9C77-E08D97D84F8AWhat is the good life? Everyone has a different answer for this question. I like to think of it as living in harmony with yourself. Forgiving all past mistakes and cleansing the soul. How many times in your life have in captured a double rainbow 🌈 with a camera? Does it mean something or is it a phenomenon of nature? I saw the rainbow and my mind and body seemed to relax. All is well, I told myself, life is good.

Pura Vida means the good life. I am retired and living over looking Lake Arenal. I am fortunate, I breathe fresh air, look at beauty everyday and write as often as possible. I changed my life and renewed my life’s philosophy. I eat freshly grown fruit and vegetables and lost one hundred pounds. I meditate, pray and thank God everyday for allowing me to live a new vigorous life.

I left Las Vegas after viewing a night with six murders. It seems that Las Vegas was getting out of hand and dangerous. I packed my bags and said this is not for me. I live a life of writing and planting my garden. Wouldn’t you like to smell fresh air? Be more relaxed and worry free? I am correcting my third novel and looking out at a fog covered lake. It is as if the lake disappeared in a matter of minutes. It is raining, it is the rain Forrest, it is the tail end of the rainy season and we had tons of rain. It is quiet; no dogs barking, no cars or trucks, just tranquility.

It is a good time to write or read. My new novel; The Chameleon Returns, is the sequel to The Man With a Limp. I hope you take a Chance and read one of my books. Is it cold where you live? Is the fire place going? I hope so! Work on enjoying the good life; make paradise where you are, live the good life! Pura Vida!

Check out the bookstore below, Thank You!

Chapter one

Revenge of the President

Lucky is not surprised the President arrived safely at the Cherry Farm. A plan was put into place the day Marc and Thomas intercepted the email from Cornel  Saunders, Vice President of the United States; it showed the time and date of the Presidents departure. No one else was privy to that appointment. The email to Congressman Thomas Swanson did not say where the President and his wife was going, only when he was leaving for a day to relax.

Why was it important for the Congressman to know? Why did the Vice President send the email? The only explanation is a conspiracy to murder the President. How many other people are involved in the conspiracy? Why did the Vice President need to eliminate Lucky and Jack?

The President had been uncomfortable with his administration. He felt uneasy with his people, especially with his close friend, Cornel  Saunders, who seems to be fighting against the President’s agenda; Curtailing the power of the Drug Manufacturers in the United States of America. President Alexander wished to control the cost of prescription medicine. The President felt a profit of five billion dollars a quarter was ridiculous. The President wanted to stop what he called the extortion of the American people. He proposed a commission to regulate the price of prescriptions: drug manufactures must supply the cost of each medicine; transport, production, distribution, and maintenance of the company. Bill, PRC 2019, will bring together a commission to start regulating the Drug Industry. One month ago the bill passed both houses to show support for the President. It was a strict mandate that the President introduces, and Congress surprised the President. The people were given a poll to establish the controls and show their feelings. An overwhelming eighty-eight percent of the people in the United States took the poll and expressed their opinions about the greed in the drug industry. The survey let the Congress know the people wanted change now. The President was to sign the bill when the assassination attempt occurred.

Six months before the assassination attempt Lucky receives a phone call from Curt Carlyle. Curt believes the President is in danger and wants Lucky’s team to investigate. He wants Thomas to crack the computer firewall at the White House. Curt wants all emails checked for treasonous activity. No one is exempt; not the Vice President, everyone is under suspicion. Curt is following his investigation with his Secret Service people.  A Superior Court Judge is notified by the President to give Curt subpoenas and warrants for the evasion of White House email. Judge Andrews is asked to keep quiet about the warrants. The President told him his situation, and the judge agreed to cooperate to save his President. The personnel checks and interrogation of low-level employees began. Curt is hoping someone overheard of a plot against the President; praying for a small mistake, a clue of a conspiracy. Mark from the FBI is asked to help Thomas. They work well together and are hard to stop. Two months go by, and the duo cannot crack the firewall. The White House has the most stringent computer security in the world. Thomas was sending an email to the White House, to the President when the Vice President accidentally sent an email to Thomas informing the Congressman of the Presidents agenda. The Vice President’s plan to assassinate the President. It was a simple error; the Vice President sent it to tswenson@aol.com instead of tswanson@aol.com. Thomas told Lucky about the mistake and sent it to the right email address so the Congressman would receive it.

The Lake

IMG_3219Mornings are beautiful in San Luis, Costa Rica. This picture is from La Mission in Arenal. It is a great sunset looking from the outside dining area. As you can see, Costa Roca has it all; lots of green, great sunsets and sunrises, and in this part of the country great weather. I live in San Luis and have a great view of Lake Arenal. If you are a writer, you cannot help but be inspired. The air is fresh, people are kind, and great vegetable markets.

When I first arrived in Costa Rica, I had high blood pressure, a penchant towards Diabetes and a gloomy outlook in life and I took the plunge; I bought property and never looked back. No more worries about life, no Diabetes, or high blood pressure. Isn’t that what living is about? No stress, plenty of exercise, and something to look forward too-Living Pura Vida!

I have written eight books since dropping my feet on the Costa Rican rich black soil. My imagination is inspired by the people and the freshness in the air. Yes it rains a lot, but the temperature here is mild. It never gets colder than fifty-eight degrees or no hotter than ninety-one (only trice), it is usually below eighty-six degrees. Pura Vida! It has everything; inexpensive groceries and a healthy living. Cars and Gasoline are expensive; five to six dollars a gallon for gas and a car Twenty-five years old cost four thousand dollars.

Corina and I like  our cabin overlooking Lake Arenal. It is quiet, a comfortable place to live where you never hear of murder, or mass killings. My kind of comfort, Pura Vida!

“Crying Inside
She held my hand tight
She knew something was not right
We continued our walk
I was not ready to talk

Money was tight
I was crying inside
I lost my job
I feel myself being robbed

My life is upside down
My house is foreclosure bound
Two years to pay off the contract
My house was the first one in the tract

The corporation closed its doors
After a bitter take over war
Lost my pension as it erupted
They did fine; they bankrupted

I am crying inside
My family and I will survive
Will the bank forgive my loan?
Can I save my home?

The government saved the banks
Who do I have to thank?
I am crying inside”

Star Wars

img_4388Let freedom ring! Sound  bells and let the world know we are adding a new service to the military. It will be a branch of the Air Force; The Space Rangers! Wait minute! Wasn’t that a TV SHOW? Did the Pentagon watch the series to get the idea that was thrown around when Ronald Reagan was the boss? We are trillions in debt and the government wants to add Space Cowboys to our already sizable debt. I can here Congress now: Do not worry General, we can cut food stamps, welfare, school lunches, social security, Obama Care, but we are not cutting out our candy machines.

Life is good knowing Stars Wars Inc is protecting the universe. We do need our satellites with the stars. Could you imagine a country blowing out an ATT, or Comcast Satellite; the riots would really begin. I will go back to my writing, the Government is tiring out my mind and body with their new schemes. Maybe congress should make a special election,(like Obama Care that was thrown down  our throats even though we did not want it), let the people decide. That would be a new concept, wouldn’t it?

Law suits everywhere! Spending money to stop the Ruskies at every turn. Impeach the President, jail this judge, oversite committee  for this and that so congress looks to protectAmerica’s interest as long as a lobbiest has the pay off. Ain’t life grand? Back in Costa Rica I relax and write and pray my country will be alright. Has common sense left the barn? We will see, Hey Harrison Ford, you may get a job offer.

Until next time, read a good book. Interested? Push the links below for my bookstores. Pura Vida!

“New Year

How do you plan?
When the world is in a hot frying pan?
Chaos in Iran, attacking Iraq,
Breaking all international pacts.

Terrorist in Saudi and Afghanistan,
Terrorist in Yemen waiting to join the band;
Fiat currency being devalued,
Stocks and bonds have no value.

Foreclosures throughout the nation,
Joblessness causing exasperation,
Homeless eating out of the trash,
The world heading to economic collapse.

How do you see the future?
How do you sift through all the manure?
The stench of politics making you angry
As you get economically buried.

Sit down and have a beer.
Hold your loved ones close and near.
Forget the government has a plan.
Depend on your mind and make a stand.

Search the world,
Find your pearl,
Where you can live inexpensively;
Carry your social security

“Spend ten dollars for dinner,
Have doctors who are givers,
Rent at three hundred dollars;
A government that is not a bother.

Try Chile, Ecuador, Costa Rica.”

Facebook

IMG_3219I love sunsets! This particular sunset is the back of los Bristos in the la Mission Hotel in Arenal, Costa Rica. Forgive me if I misspelled the location, but I am having difficulty with my search because the WiFi is weak when it is raining and it is a big storm this afternoon, lightning and thunder. This photo makes me relax and gives me perspective. Right now, I am disenchanted with Facebook. Too much hate, opinions and politics.

I moved to Costa Rica for peace and tranquility. In Las Vegas there are three to four deaths a night. Politics are raging and the parties  dragged it into Facebook. I go out to a gringo breakfast and people want to talk politics. What ever happened to, How is your day? What do you do to keep busy? Guess what, I stopped going to the breakfasts because you can take politics where the sun does not shine. Oops 😬

I am tired with the same old hate rhetoric. I am tired of one party bad mouthing the other party. That is what you get on Facebook and it overflows into your daily life. Everyone has an opinion of our President; especially those people who said they would move from The USA if he got elected. None of them backed up their big mouths; I guess the money is too good. Well, I did move out of the states for peace and quiet 🤫 and Facebook will not give it to me.

I have a big decision to make since I advertise my books on Facebook; should I stay or should I go? What do you think? Press the link below for my bookstore:

The Man with a Limp
It is a cold winter morning in Santa Cruz, California. It is windy, rainy and no one is at the beach. A lone man, about twenty-four years old is walking with a six-foot bamboo walking stick. He is wearing a rain poncho, a rain hat, and rubber boots. He has thick long black hair down to his shoulders and a massive long black beard hanging down to the middle of his chest. He walks with a limp on the left side. His hand is curled up, and his left arm hangs down, appearing to be a useless appendage. He is smiling; it is obvious he likes to walk in the rain. With him, as he walks is a large German Shepard who has scars on its face and a large scar on his chest. I own a restaurant on the beach called “The Santa Cruz Experience.” It is an inexpensive diner with the usual Santa Cruz decor: surfboards and surfing pictures hang on the walls and a Harley Davidson motorcycle setting inside to the right, by the front door. I like to ride. My name is Jack.

Is this the way of the world?

IMG_3904I believe a rainbow is one of the most beautiful, relaxing escapes of nature. After a heavy rainstorm I look forward to looking at a rainbow and feel disappointed when it does not appear. Lately it seems like the world needs a few extra rainbows. I am ready to chuck my Facebook pages and become a hermit. I cannot believe the promotion of negative politics, hate, racism, call to action to cause riots and wars. What have we become in our society today when an actress thinks she can cause havoc with our country? Do not people think for themselves or are they guided like the pied piper syndrome? Listen to my music and follow me to hell. How do those shows exist in our society that promote attacks on celebrities in an orchestrated attack to make money? Why did not the celebrity stand up and walk away instead of listening to that tirade? By the way the comedian looked ridiculously hateful.

What do you think? I am tired of excerpts being cut from interviews to bend a point of view. Do you feel the same as I do? What people do not understand is the power of kindness, understanding, and the ability to sift through all the BS. Do I have to spell it out? In order to eliminate hate, prejudice, and anger in the world, you cut the head off the snakes. Those who promote hate within their race are wrong! Period, do not give them a forum to speak. Cut off their beloved program, stop electing hate promoters who promise something for nothing and never deliver.

FB is a great media platform, but I am tired of people promoting negative  👎 stories. I hate politics, because it is a platform to promote negativity. Where are the Mr. Smith’s in Washington that promote a moral agenda? Those people who wish to help our country, not tear it down. When was the last time you saw a news program that showed a young black boy running into a burning apartment to save an elderly white woman who is trapped? A white man pulling an Asian man from a horrible car accident and giving him CPR and saving his life. No, news needs to show how people are murdered everyday in Las Vegas, Detroit Michigan, or New Orleans, Louisiana. Have we become that cullused and disingenuous in our nature that we do not like stories with rainbows?

Fell from the Sky

Angel, you fell from the sky.
You felt my sorrow; you heard my cry.
You touched my shoulder, and I was not alone.
In time of death, the angel shows,

“Show the way through the light.
Show me to my husband’s flight.
Bring me to my family and friends.
Do not desert me at the end.

I led a good life, raised my family well.
Eighty-nine years is quite a spell:
Seen a world war and two police actions,
Saw polio vaccinations have a positive reaction,

Outlived my husband and three sisters,
Independence with no assistance.
Three daughters live close by,
Children I can rely.

Angel, you fell from the sky.
You felt my sorrow, heard my cry
You touched my shoulder, and I was not alone.
A little more time, I am not ready to go.
Thank you, angel.”

A Family Wall

Xlibrismain-qimg-d254dc0b11ccc313ae0d9482d5cc7296-cJohn Lennon is one of my favorite songwriters. He and Paul McCartney collaborated with some great songs about life. Six months ago my girlfriend, Corina rushed home for a family situation. Mom had two strokes, It almost killed her and the Doctors where able to continue her life. Devastated, a large family needed to communicate during the next few months. Mom lost the ability to talk and use her right arm and hand. Mom became depressed, tired, but not disagreeable. A strong woman she fights her dehabilatation.

Her Son, Jason, put up a Family Wall app so everyone can communicate about their beloved Mother. A family of eight adult children, living hundreds of miles apart, can communicate with pictures, text, video, and keep tabs on family. I believe it is the greatest app ever invented and started with my Family wall. I took it a step further, What is a Family Wall? In my mind, It is a place of solace, comfort, where you have no grudges, no anger, and no opinions. It is a place for unconditional love. All families from time to time have differences, and the family moves on. How can you live life fully if you cannot forgive and forget?

I added a group of my closest friends, not acquaintances, those people who stuck with you through the hard times.I can count on one hand those friends whom care about my family.

I have not understood the nuances of the wall, how to include everyone, the process of starting has held me back, but Corina is sharp about the wall and is slowly indoctrinating me to the finer points of the wall. I started the wall because I wish to be involved, being in Costa Rica, our phones are poor instruments of communication. Writing comes easy to me; being a private individual, that leaves FB and Twitter out. Being a writer, I need a public persona, which I do not want for my family and closest friends.

What do you think and feel about this Idea, the Family Wall? After all, it is a free app to a lifetime of family communication; birthdays, graduations, illness, plays your children might be in, sporting events, grades, or just plain conversation. Asking for help in difficult times, even if it is just a chat to relieve your tension. Don’t you think that it is a home Run? A win-win scenario where everyone one has a say in life’s family circle ⭕️?

Right now I show progress with the cabin we are building in Costa Rica. My newest endeavor in novel writing and pictures of Costa Rica. Come on family, What do you have to add to the Nugent Family Wall? Pura Vida!

Just an update

You made it possible for our marital elation’s
As we travelled up life’s stream

Your love would sustain us
I was the building and you the truss
I thank you and love you”

Perseverance

IMG_3906After a long day of correcting my writing with Grammarly; reediting paragraphs, correcting misspelled words and commas. I feel satisfied the manuscript is good, ready for the publisher to put it into a book format only to have to correct some more mistakes made by the editor who wishes to change the essence of the book and you cry foul and change it back to what makes you happy 😃

This takes kindness, patience and most of all  perseverance. Mny times you will be faced with these challenges. You will find out the easy part is the manuscript you spent months writing ✍️The challenge is arriving at the printing stage and selling your great accomplishment, which is in the eye of the beholder. The critics can whittle you down to size. I like being an angry humble writer with little patience for the publishing stage. I give them a complete book with chapters and page numbers; all they need is a table of contents and a new chapter on a new page, not a finishing page on the last chapter. You give them a bio and you are ready, RIGHT!

I like to use my own photos and it is a challenge because it is always not clear enough, the pixels are wrong. I do not understand? It does not compute, it doesn’t matter that you wrote the entire poetry book on a vacation and you want it to be inspirational, because of this great picture that looks like people are walkover the sands of heaven. Right, the pixels are blurry; of course they are blurry, the are walking to heaven, right.

I learned if you are patient and willing to persevere, anything is possible or is it my striving to have things done ✅ my way an obstacle to compliance? What do you think? I am in the process of printing my second novel and it seems to take forever. Persever I tell myself; we are just around the corner.  I am in the writing stage of my fourth novel, The Dreamer and I get stuck on chapters.. I reboot m mind and wait for the process to start again. Does this happen to you writers? Until next time, Pura Vida! Press the links below for my bookstores:

Things have calmed down since the bomb attempts of 2018. Lucky and Carla have become an item. Carla has transferred to the Monterey office so she can live with Lucky in Santa Cruz. Lucky’s Mother Sunny has grown to love Carla and Lucky could not be happier. Jack is busy at the Restaurant and has found a new woman himself. Jasmine owns a surf shop and gives surfing lessons. Jack calls her Jazz, “Why do you call me Jazz?” “It is what you do to me Jazz; you are like a great piece of music that is ever-changing. You keep me feeling great,” Jack smiles. Jack calls Lucky, it is Saturday morning, and Jazz is at the restaurant, so Jack invites Lucky and Carla for breakfast. Breakfast will be at ten, out on the sand, at Lucky’s favorite spot. Jack wanted a change of pace, so he ordered a pitcher of Bloody Mary’s. Each glass has a peppered asparagus, an olive, and a sprig of thyme. “Jack, what is the occasion?” Lucky ask.

“Yeah Honey, what is all the hubbub about Bub?” Retorts Jazz laughingly. As Jack stands, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a box, and falls to one knee. “Jazz, will you marry me?” Silence, the ocean seems to sound loudly against the sand for a few seconds as Jazz looks at Lucky and Carla, smiles and dives into Jack’s arms. “What took you so long?” Jazz cries in Jack’s arms and tells him she loves him. Carla and Lucky walk over and hug the couple. “I am buying breakfast this morning!” Carla says.

Violence in today’s world

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Why are humans violent? We kill to protect our selves against violent aggressors. We do not kill for food; we have an endless supply of food in grocery stores. You can buy specialty meats like venison, buffalo and even snakes and alligators. You can buy a gun almost anywhere at anytime; I know because I bought four weapons, One is an automatic shot gun for home protection. I did not want to miss a breaking in and enter if he did not heed my warning. Does that make me a violent individual or a cautious man?

I am a novelist that writes about the violent nature of man. Does that make me a proponent of violence or am I making the reader find a solution to our violent ways? I drawer the line at video games that seem to bring out the worst in man. Case in point; “Guns of Glory,” A video constantly aired on my I Pad that shows soldiers being massacred as if it was a honorable death. If I drop an atomic weapon on North Korea to keep them in line to our way of thinking, is that Honorable?

How do you feel about a hero who is violent, not because of his violent nature, but because of necessity he needs to be? He shows an all in mentality, no half way measures in his personality. Sometimes I feel hypocritical about my way of thinking when I write. I feel a need to develop a hero at the expense of civility. Crazy 😜 or practical, tell me what you think.

Writers Amaze Me

A1E4B5C1-8F48-4688-A6CF-69A9F218F713I have been writing poems, short stories, novels for the past ten years and have come to realize I have a lot to learn about writing. Truly great writers amaze me, the Stephen Kings, Patterson’s, Hemingway’s; how they develop interesting plots and have subplots going at the same time. How do they do it?

I watched a movie the other night that was exciting, never boring; a movie script produced from a famous mystery writer. It had me guessing through the entire movie. Being a movie junky, looking to see what book the story was adapted, it simply amazed me. Does this happen to you? My question to you is how do they come up with these amazing plots and subplots. Like Star Wars, a life time of scripts came from one story and it gets more creative as production becomes more sophisticated. What a wonderful world of writing we live in! Don’t you think?

My hope , you enjoy my stories, poems, and my new novel, through Litfire publications: The Man with a limp, and take the time to email to me and talk to me about my books. You can get to my bookstores at these links below:

Limp

The first link is to my Xlibris bookstore; I have twelve books of poetry and short Stories. The second link is to my new novel, The Man With a Limp, It is ready for sale  in Softcover and Hardcover and an ebook to follow.  An excerpt from my new novel below, enjoy 😉 Pura Vida:

The security is on the move: checking trash cans and sniffing for
bombs. Off to the right of the restaurant on the sand, two sets of bleachers are set up by the city. The restaurant is full, and a young man with a back-pack sits in the middle of the restaurant. He is a college age boy, blonde hair, blue eyes, and dressed expensively. He puts his backpack on the floor and goes to use the restroom. He is gone several minutes, and I call Lucky. Max comes charging through the door as Lucky follows. Max stops in the middle of the room and sniffs. Suddenly he turns away and charges over a table and attacks a man; knocking him to the floor. The Man pulls out a detonator, and Max bites his hand so hard he twists off two fingers and the man was unable to push the button.
Lucky rushes over to grab the detonator from the man. It is a wireless remote. On the man’s body under his baggy shirt is a vest of C4. It would have killed hundreds of people. The young man comes out of the restroom, and three agents grab his arms and frisk him. Another detonator, the officers handcuff him and find C4 in his backpack. The Agents take him to a unique building set up to interrogate any terrorist at the event. The word is instantly sent out to look for pairs of individuals working in tandem. Lucky tells his people it only takes one explosion to cause enough distraction to set off several more bombs.

An excerpt from Short Stories by Timothy M Nugent below:

Every time I walk into the den, the house seems to come alive with memories. I sit on the handmade leather couch with the push button leg raisers and extend my legs to relax. I had the couch made for my wife, who had cancer and needs the extra comfort the couch affords. I remember coming home late from work, opening the door and Marian would be laying on the sofa instead of being in bed. Marian wanted me to see her; she would be the first thing I saw when I came home. After she had died; I would envision Marian laying on the couch as I opened the entrance to the den. Corina is taking a shower after our nine-hour motorcycle trip from Las Vegas, Nevada. As Corina walks into the room, she adds a picture of the two of us on the blue full dress Harley and hangs it on the wall above the TV. It adds a dimension of ownership for Corina. Makes her feel she is part of the home. I tell her I like it and she smiles “you think Marian would mind?” Corina says. “No, I believe she is smiling. Happily, you are comfortable in our home,” I say. “Our home, It has a nice ring, doesn’t Honey,?” Corina says. “Yes, it does,” I say.

I hope you give my books a chance on a rainy afternoon or on vacation in Hawaii as you seat on the beach under a large umbrella, shading yourself from the hot sun, drinking umbrella drinks, reading one of my books, Thank you for your attention.

How do you write?

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
LuLu &LaLa

Questioning eyes 👀 wish to know, how do you prepare your writing? Novels, short stories or poetry, what gets the mind rolling on ideas? Do you write an outline on your book idea and add chapters, lines , paragraphs? How do you get your writing juices moving in the right direction. Are your books based on your experiences or what happens on the evening news that prompts a Detective 🕵️‍♀️ story or a spy thriller.

My poetry never uses an outline and is stimulated by emotion. I wrote my first three poetry books around the life and death of my wife and the woman I met a year after my wife’s death. I rode my Harley around the country working at healing a broken heart 💔. I wrote a book of short stories which had a basis in my childhood. I would write an outline on some of the stories, but on many stories my mind flowed with ideas and exaggerations to make the stories come alive.

I have prepared four novels; I started my first Novel, The Man With A Limp, with an outline which I changed constantly. I wanted to humanize a harden Iraqi war hero and constantly changed my format. In some chapters I discarded the outline completely because I liked the flow of the story that was popping out of my imagination. On my second novel, The Chameleon, I did not use an outline except for the villains of the book. I flowed from my first book to this next chapter in Lucky McLaughlins life as the protagonist. I enjoyed writing about his friends and family as he searched out evil in the world. Charlie is my third Novel of Lucky McLaughlin and his family. Charlie is his athletic daughter who wishes to continue her aging Father’s work. I use the internet to help research stories and keep me from flowing to far off base, I was hoping to make the stories sound real life and credible. My last Novel I am writing is about Lucky McLaughlin’s Father. It is called Brooks Mc Laughlin, the creator of the Chameleon.

This story has a basic outline that is the villains in each chapter mixed in with the trama and exhilaration of everyday life. Much of my books fly by the outlines because I get distracted with the characters and I wish to expand on them. Does this happen to you in an effort to write a compelling story? Wikipedia has been a great source for my stories and u tube videos giving historic information to add to some stories. I do not spend hours on research; I grasp an Idea and flow with what I have learned.

How about you? How do you write your stories? I have Published my one Novel and will publish my second Novel in a couple months. Unfortunately, money has it’s restraints and the process for me is slow, but I enjoy writing ✍️. Pura Vida!
